Householders in the city and suburbs were in short snpply of meat to-day, the employees at most of the butchers' and small goods shops having failed to turn to, demanding a 48-hour week, and an increase of 10s a week in wages. la a few cases the demands were conceded.

Other butcher:-; are making a shift with the assistance of members of the family, and the unusual sight of girla and women carving joints is common.
