PECULIAR DEVELOPMENT IN COURT.

Wellington, Feb. 9. A rather extraordinary revelation was made in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon in reference to a case in [ which H. Martindale was charged with publishing at Wellington a document containing a notification on behalf of Scott and Martindale as to betting on horse races to"be run at Auckland and Woodville during December. Chief Detective Broberg stated that the principal witness for the prosecution, a woman from Levin, had report,ed to him that her notes bearing on the ease had been taken from her by her husband. The position was a most peculiar one, and rather serious for the police, as he had good reason to believe that the husband was a hostile witness. At the suggestion of the Chief Deiective the husband was called, and he admitted to the Magistrate without any hesitation that he had taken the notes "This is most unusual," said his Worship. "I can do nothing. I have no power to made him return the notes. However, it is a matter for himself. He would be well advised to return tho notes."
Chief Detective Broberg: "Will you warn him that he must produce the notes to-morrow. If not he will probably destroy thorn before then.
His Worship (to witness): "Remember, you must produce those notes tomorrow when this case comes on for hearing. Do yoii understand?"
Witness: "I understand what you sny."
