The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, Jan. 17th, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified,, being average market prices on spot): Meat.—Generally the market is quiet, with ©mall business doing. New Zealand prices are firm owing to a scarcity of mutton. North Island mutton 5d to .*s high as 5 l-8d for best quality, Lamb.-—There is no change in prices. ■ewes 3 3-Sd. Beef. —Stocks are almost exhausted. Prices are firmer. New Zealand hinds 4£d, fores 4d, chil-ed hinds sd, fores 4 l-Bd. Jgk Butter.—The market is rather JfflP t and irregular. Buyers are scaraif?or New Zealand, being cautious on account of th© large Vnipmei;is afloat. There is a ooor demand for Danish'at 123s to J2Ss. Australian is in fair demand at !10s to 114s; Siberian 108s to 112s. t'nsalted Australian and New: Zealand Is 8d to 2s higher than salted. Cheese.—The market remains firm, with a good demand. Canadian white68s to 695; coloured 69s to 70s. N«w 'Zealand white 65s to 665; coloured bos Hemp.— Hio Manila market is active at higher prices, chiefly owing gto brisk demand from America. Fair ""Ten* Manila £28 10s, forward shipment ±^».. The output from Manila for the week was 9000 bales. The New Zealand market is firm. Dominion offerings are very small, but good business has been done nl second hand. New Zealand Kood fair £26, fair £24. These quotations vro nominal.
