HEROIC QUARTERMASTER.
Tlie heroic death of a quartei master at sea is recorded in a telegram from the captain of the Highland Loch, it is as follows: —"Regret to report Quartermaster Herbert Moore was drowned in mid-ocean on October 3, whilst attempting to save the life of second-class passenger. Boats lowered, but no avail." Moore was a typical British sailor, 30 years of age, who bad only recently left the navy after 14 years service, with his papers- marked "Excellent." For a time he Hired with his brother, but the call of the sea proved too much for him, and he became quartermaster in the Highland Loch, England to Buenos Aires. This was only his second voyage. On the occasion of the tragedy the v ery was raised that there was a passenger ovorboard, and without a moment's hesitation Moore, Avho from his boyhood had been noted for his almost reckless bravery, jumped in to try and effect a rescue . A strong sea was running at the time, which; apparently overcame him and he disappeared.
