N. A. McLaren, Herr Lommer was called upon to give his report of tho musical- section. He said that the competitions had started in the right place. The recent competitions had been a very decided improvement on the initial ones, arid there were items of some excellence, some of the competitors gaining full marks in several divisions. The performances of the prize winners were freely criticised, the judge stating that possibly none ot the'contestants were at their best through nervousness, so that none who did not win need be discouraged. Herr Lemmer then gave a violin selection (accompanied by Mis Pearl Israel) and Avas encored. ~ The Rev W. Baumber was tho next to give the results of his judgment^ his section being oratory. He had accepted the position of judge, but he did not profess^to be an orator himself. He had, however, . judged speakers in accordance with the ettect produced on him. Mr Baumber said that no matter how fine the delivery, if the subject matter was poor, the re-1 suit would not be of much account. Mr Baumber then gave a recitation entitled "The Patriot." , Mr Israel, secretary, said he would like to take advantage of the presence of the competitors to say that m + tlie initial competitions of last year thoj had commenced in the dark, and that even.in respecfto the recent wmpetitions they,had also worked in the> daik to-a large extent. The, general opimon was,' however, 'that the competitions were a great success. . " ■ . , Votes of thanks were then rtoved and carried with acclamation, _to the following: The president (the Rev J H. MacKenzie) who so ably presided at all the contests; Mrs MacKenzie, foi presenting the prizes; the Rev \v.
