RIWAKA.
A very successful sale of Avork in connection with the RiAvaka Presbyterian Church Avas held in the Oddfellows' Hall, RiAvaka, on October Bth. The hall ,Avas very tastefully decorated Avith evergreens and a number of Chinese lanterns. This Avoi-k was undertaken by Mr Phil RoAvling, Avho deserves great credit for the mariner in which lie adorned the hall.
The sale Avas opened by Mr Chas. Fry, who, in a few Avell chosen Avords made reference to the fine' display in the various stalls, and also' to the excellent spirit which seemed to prevail over all. He expressed the hope that all Avould have a good day, and that the stalls would be cleared by night. Thereafter the stall-holders were kept busy Avith the rush of buyers. The following Avere those in charge of the stalls: Ladies' stall, Mesdames Cook and Mayo; children's stall, Mesdames Chittenden, Thomson, Jenkins, and OAyen ; fancy stall, Mrs French and the Misses D. and R. Stihvellj lollie stall, Misses Black and Fry; mixed stall, a number of girls who were designated: the "Busy. Bees," with Mrs Turner in I charge .'as-1 the'"Queen Bee." One of the most attractive tq'ycrang find old Avas the fish pond, which was in charge of Miss Fry, who also did a great deal toAvards the success of the 'sale in other Avays. She "was assisted by Miss Birch, av-lio Avas attired as a fisher girl. . Those Avho Avere in charge of the tea tables were kept busy throughout the sale. These were Mesdames L. Francois. AskeAv nnd Harvey, assisted by an excellent staff or workers. In the evening the hall was crowded to overflowing, and a number of musical items Avere rendered at intervals. In the nail driving competition Mr Val RoAvling came first and Miss Eileen AskeAv second. Mr A. Forsythe came first in the hat trimming competition for men, Avith Mr T. Mayo a good sec-
ond. Great credit is due to Miss Black for training the children to take part in the evening's programme. There were recitations by Beaulah Hodge and Lorna French; and about ten little girls sang tAA-o action songs, for one of Avhieh the audience demandedan encore Other items were a pianoforte solo, Miss D. SiillAvell; duet, Messrs Edwards and Forsythe; musical monologue, Mr G. H. Budden; and a recitation by Hazey Thomson. Altogether the effort was a pronounced success. The total takings were upwards of £62, and as the expenses are small, there Avill be a substantial net profit. , It is understood that the proceeds are in aid of improvements to the manse.
