LIQUORS IN NO LICENSE DISTRICTS.
TINCTURE OF ORANGE. (Special to "The Colonist.") Christchurch, Sopt. 21.; In no-licen&e districts persons with perverted tastes make up all sorts of substitutes to satisfy their cravings for whisky or beer. Parsnip, gooseberry and plum wines, home-brewed beer, and yea-st are extensively produced and drunk. At tho. Magistrate's Court at Ashburton yesterday a man named Thomas Nolan, who was convicted for drunkenness and other serious offences the previous day, was again charged with insobriety, and with having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. In reply to a question by the Bench as to where he had obtained liquor, ho said he never drank any whisky, but had purchased a bottle of "tincture of orange" from a chemist, and taking too much of this it went to his head. It appears that "tincture of orango" is a favourite beverage with many people in no-license districts. The charge of drunkenness' was withdrawn sine die, while Nolan was, remanded to appear later on on a ' charge of procuring liqiior during th.c, currency of a prohibition order. Nolan had been convicted three times for drunkenness during the past four mouths. :
