A HEARTY WELCOME.
OPENING OF THE CHURCH STEPS Ideal weather conditions prevailed on Saturday when his Excellency tho Governor, Lord Liverpool, who" was accompanied by the- .Countess of Liverpool, paid his first official visit to Aelson. Ttxe vice-rogal party included Captains. Eastwo</d and Hutton,' aide-de-camps, and Mr. Gavin Hamilton, private secretary. The streets traversed by Ju S Excellency and party from the Port were strung with-flags and bunting was displayed on many business houses; Large crowds assembled m the streets, and there was a dense throng of spectators at the Church ■ Steps, where tho official reception took place. A mounted escort was provided by tho Permanent Artillery under Captains Lampen and N. P. Adams, wmle the Col-ego Cadets, under Major Broad, formed the guard of honour. A number of Territorial officers wore also present in uniform. At the steps a platform had been erected, which was decorated with nikau palms and ferns, while on the front was a flag inscribed with the words "Welcome to Nelson," Prior to the arrival of tho vice-rogal party the Citizens' Band enlivened the proceedings with selections. ARRIVAL OF THE GOVERNOR.* Tho Town Clerk (Mr. G. A. Edmonds) met their Excellencies and party at .the Port, and conducted them to the Church Stops, arriving as the clocks were striking ten, the- ax>pointed hour. As Lord Liv-erpool stepped from his carriage, the ,12th. .Regiment Band struck up the National Anthem, tho giiard of honour saluted, and the Union Jack was unfurled. Having inspected the College Cadets, and chatted for a few minutes with the various officials, the Governor and Lady Liverpool were conducted to the I dais, where they were received by the [Mayor (Mr. W. Lock) and the Mayorless, and subsequently introduced to the invited guests, who were allotted seats on the platform. Those who were present weie:— The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs Lock) ; City Councillors; the Town Clerk (Mr. G. A. Edmonds); the chief clerk (Mr. L. Hesseltine); Mr. Thos. Cawthron and Mrs. Wright and Miss Wright (sister and niece respectively;; Mr Heaps (Sheriff); the deputy > Mayor of Richmond (Mr G. E. Chisnall); the Mayor of Motueka (Mr. Simpson); the chairman of the Waimea County Council (Mr. Horatio" Everett) ; the chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board (Mr H. "Baigent); the chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board (Mr H. R. Duncan) ; Mr H, Atmore, M.P. ; Mr. P. Adams'"-'{president of the Nelson branch of the Overseas Club) : Mrs. N. Adams; Mr. C. Y. Fell (president of the Nelson branch of the Navy League); Rev. J. P. Kempthorne (theBishop of Nelson's Commissary); Rev. W. Baumber (representing the N«-lson Ministers' Association); and Mr. W. W. Snodgrass (president of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce). The Countess of Liverpool was presented with a handsome bouquet "of flowers by Lillian Lock, the Mayor's daughter.
