NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly' meeting of the Jselson Education Board was concluded yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. Lock (chairman), J. D. Beuko, H. J. Harris, W, N. Franklyn, G. Gothard, E. J. Scantlobury, G.^B. Shepherd, and F. W. Smith/ Tho examination reports for the month were presented by the Chief Inspector, tho various schools examined being marked as follows:—Good: Birchfield, Suminerlea, Burnett's Face, West-port, Granity. Satisfactory to go6d: Seddonville, St Canice's, Cape Foulwind, Denniston. Satisfactory: Wainiangaroa, Fairdqwn, Sergeant's Hill, St. Mary's High, Miss Enright's Charleston, Hector, Addison's, To Kahu,'Brighton, Millerton. _ The Inspector's recommendations in regard to the proposed enlargement of tho Stoke school were referred to Mr. Thompson for his report. The report of the sub-committee re the proposed separate school at Tahuna was ordered to stand over for one month to enable the Chief Inspector (who was a member of the committee), to peruse the report.. On the motion of Mr. Gothard, the, chairman (Mr; Lock) was appointed to the committee. ' A deputation consisting of Messrs. C. Russ and H. Parkes, representing residents, of Wairoa Gorge, waited upon the Board in connection with the establishment of a household or aided school in that district. Speaking in support of the request, Mr. Russ said that there were 28 children in the Gorge, ten of whom at present had to walk 3i- to 4 miles every day to school at River Terrace. If necessary the residents were prepared to give a site for the' erection of a school. Tho deputation having withdrawn, it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Smith to apply to the Department for a grant for tho erection of a school in Wairoa Gorge. A letter was read from the Inspec-tor-General, asking the Board if it would assist the defence authorities by forwarding to the nearest group officer each year the names of all boys of 14 years or approaching that age. —The request was acceded to. In regard to the date of the anmial examination of the Reef ton district school, the inspectors reported that there would be no difficulty in holding tho head teacher's annual examination later in tho year, and that they would arrange- to have the Standard VI. proficiency examination at the time it is held at the other main centres in the district. They further recommended that. ; the adjoining schools, Sacred Heart? and. Black's Point,. should fall in with such arrangement.

It was resolved that the secretary write to the Sacred' Heart, authorities and tho Black's Point committee, asking them to fall in with the suggestion made by the inspectors. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved to recommend the Department to establish, "observation" schools in districts where there are none at present, as requested- by the Taranaki Board. Letters and petitions from residents protesting against the proposed amalgamation of Black's Point and Reef ton schools were read.—On the motion of Mr.. Scantlebury, seconded by Mr. Shepherd,. it was resolved that no action be taken. It was also resolved to invite applications for the position of head master of Black Point's school. | The request of the Wakefield Committee for certain information in regard to technical work, singing, sewing, and drill, was. referred to the inspectors. . The secretary of the Dominion conference of tho Farmers' Union forwarded a remit 'drawing the attention of tho Government and education boards to the neglect of back-block schools, and suggesting that the salaries of teachers of these schools should be supplemented by grants from tho Board.—Received. A. complaint was received that Progress school -remained open on the King's Birthday, but was closed on the day of the Grey bye-election.—lt was resolved to request the teacher to ■ mnko an explanation!, The boundaries of the Aporo .school district a-j defined by the Lower Montoro School Committee, were approved. The following appointments wereapproved : —Sole tpaoher. Fern Flat, Miss ■I. Win ; head teacher, Wai-uta,' Mr. It. Brown ; assistant teachers, Wcstport, Misses M. Mackay and Find lav ; .nnp.il teacher, Nelson, Miss 'Palmer. The following resignations wore accepted :—Miss A. G. Fowler, pupil teacher, Nelson; Mr. R. Irv.in, head master, Riwaka; Mr. J. Goodyer, sole teacher, Tui. Mr. Scantlebury gave notice to move that the Technical Committee comprise the whole of the members of tno Board, instead of five members as at present. On the motion of Mr. Gotbnrd, seconded by Mr. Harris, it was resolved that tho Board in future, moot on tho last Monday in every month for the despatch of business at 10 a.m., and if necessary, continue o:i the following day. ■ _______„„
