AMERICAN TARIFF BILL.

WOOL SCHEDULE

SENATE FIGHT COMMENCED.

REPUBLICAN OBJECTIONS

(Received Aug 24, 5.5 p.m.)

Washington, Aug 23

The wool schedule fight has begun in the Senate. The Republicans are strongly objecting to the reductions, and two senators spoke for six hours, characterising the Bill as a political tariff instead of being as the Democrats claimed, for revenue purposes only.

Messrs Penrose and Lafollette proposed alterations, but the Democrats refused to discuss them.

Mr Penrose claimed that the Bill unduly favoured Great Britain. Actually to Britishers the measure seemed too good to bo true.
