UNITED STATES AND NICARAGUA.
PRESIDENT WILSON'S PROPOSALS
A FAVOURABLE RECEPTION.
PROBABLE-ADOPTION BY THE
SENATE,
Washington, July.22, ; President Wilson's project to institute protection and supervision over 'Nicaragua is favourably received in the Senate, the Foreign Relations Committee supporting tho policy. The nature of tho control proposed to he oxorcisoablo by tho United States does not bind the latter country to any . obligation to pay Nicaragua s debts. It is likely, however, that the increaso in commercial stability resulting from America's control will soon place Nicaragua on a sounder finan-
cial basis. It is understood tiftt the Republicans; in the Sonato aro not likely to oftor opposition, so the* suhomo is likely to p ass . Considerable fooling probably will be engendered amongst the South American Republics, which jealously regard tho expansion of tho United States' po^cj-s.
