CLOSING RECITAL BY MR. MAUGHAN BARNETT.
(From. "The Colonist," July 8.) Large as was the. attendance at the School of Music on Friday evening, when the opening recital on the fine organ presented to the institution by Mr Thomas Cawthron was given by Mr Maughan Barnett, it was eclrpted by the numbers who crowded to near the second and closing recital last light. The seating accommodation on the- floor of the concert chamber v. as insufficient to accommodate the audience, filling the space'up to the instrument itself. The programme was again of a nature calculated to sub.ect all the qualities, of the organ to* a thorough test, the result of which was to redouble the conviction *eft .y Mr Barnett's splendid recital on Friday that the instrument is an acquisition of which the city may well be* proud. Mr _Barnett's rendering of every item again so delighted tho audience that it manifestly desired the programme t< be extended much 'beyond the contemplatled limits, and the organist gcod ; naturedly acceded to the wish of tho I audience by repeating several items. ; The programme was as follows': "Suite Gothiquo" (Boellmann), ''Am Meer'' i (Schubert), "Gavotto -in D" (Bach). i "Funeral March and Hymn of Ser- | aphs" (Guilmant), Andante con moto ; from Symphony No. 4, and finale from Symphony No. 2 (Wider), " Dornroschcn" (Bondel), and Faritaisie ; "Faust" (Gounod). As tho- closing item Mr Bernet repeated his own "Fantaisie on National Airs," at the request of Mr Cawthron." During the interval Mr Barnett briefly addressed the audience, expressing regret for his inability to comply with several requests for feces not on the programmes for the two recitals. He said he desired to take advantage of the opportunity to congratulate the people of Nelson upon being placed in i ossession, through Mr Gawthron's generosity, of an organ of such beautiful tone and quality. It vas an instrument he was sure, which wculd add greatly to tho reputation Nelson already possessed as a musical city Mr Barnett courteously acceded'to a desire widely expressed* that a sj ecial recital should be given for the benefit of the children attending the c;ty schools, and this took place yesterday morning,- when Mr Barnett 'delighted his large youthful audience, and a number of adults whom considerations of health prevented from attending the evening recitals, with a special programme. Mr Barnett also delivered an interesting address to the < nildren on the mechanism of the organ. At the close, Mr E. E. Boyes, chairman of the Town. Schools Committee, thanked Mr Cawthron for the pit.of the organ, and Mr Barnett for die recital. Hearty chefirs were given for Mr Cawthron, who was present, and! Mr Barnett.
