PANAMA CANAL PROGRESS.
On April 1 there remained only about 8000 linear feet of the Oulcbra. cut that had not yet reached grade in some parts. At the present rate of progress it is estimated that 5,500,000 cubic yards of material may he removed by October 1. Work with steam shovels wi.l then <:ease and dredges will be used to -remove the two or throe million cubic yards remaining. This amount will no doubt be increased by slides. A record for steam-shovel output was made on March 29, when five steam shovels removed 11,343 cubic yards of material in a single day from the Cucaracha slide.
