THE. HEARING COMMENCED.
\ London, July 14. • The 'Court was crowded with racing enthusiasts when the case of Richard Wootton v. Robert' Sievier, arising out of an alleged libel published in the ."Winning Post," was opened. Sievier defended himself.
Wootton's counsel, in opening, said that-^ his client had been accused of barefaced - swindling extending over a considerable period, and of robbing the public by fraudulent arrangements with other trainers and jockeys. Wootton came to England with tho highest references from Australian jockey clubs, and his sons and the two Huxloys had excellent records with regard to suspensions. Wootton, in evidence, denied the conspiracy, and said that he had never instructed jockeys to pull horses or made dishonest bets. His son .often won against his betting interests. His bluest.bets in England were a thousand" on Ben Lomond for the Newmar-. ket and Derby, which he lost.
