A libel action now agitating Hungary lias a rather curious basis. Some time ago a member of the Hungarian Chamber saiil that' the Prime Minister, Dr Yon Lukacs, was "the greatest Panamist in Europe." Tho allusion had no particular significance for most people of tho present generation, but Dr Yon Lukacs understood its meaning well enough, and he brought proceedings against the offending member. At tihe first trial, the defendant was fined ami sentenced to a month's imprisonment, but the Appeal Court quashed the sentence and ordered n. haw +.™al } which has still to bo held. The a'.lusion, of course, was to the financial scandals connected with the attempt* of the French to construct tho Panama Canal .soiiio thirty years ago.
