EXPLORATION IN NEW GUINEA.
DR WOLLASTON'S EXPEDITION.
SNOW-CLAD MOUNTAINS SCALED*
(Roceived Juno 23, 8.55 p.m.) „ Sydney, Juno 23
Advices have been received that Dtf Wollaston's expedition in New Guinea, which was sent out by tho British Museum and other bodies, succeeded in scaling the great snow-clad moun-c tains on the Dutch Portland Island. These heights had not previously been surmounted. Tho explorers climbed Mt. Castrenz, 13,000 feet, the highest peak being pioneered by a friendly; tribo of hitherto unknown little hillmen. They underwent many privations. The oxpodition secured an excellent collection of ornithological and other specimens, and scientific data.
Several expeditions w*re organised itt 1912 for the exploration of New Guinea. Dr A. F. R. Wollaston, who took part in the recent expedition of the British Ornithologists' Union in the southern part of the Dutch territory] undertook a new exploration in the same iregion, hoping to penetrate to th© snows of the central range. A Dutch expedition under Lieutenant F. Herdsrschee, made for the snowy range somewhat further oast, starting by a rout© adopted a few years ago by Dr. ,H. A., Lorentz. Just prior to these expeditions starting, good work between th» coast and the central portion of the* range had been done by an expedition under Lieutenant Cocq d'Armandville,, which fixed the position and altitude oi: a number of peaks. On the north sid*» of the island a German expedition be* out to carry through an investigation, of tho basin of the Sepik river.
