THE LEAGUE GAME.
N.S.W. DEFEATS NEW ZEALAND
(Received June 23, 8.55 p.m.)
Sydney, June 23
Tho ground was very niuddy for tho New Zealand v. New South Wales match. It was' an excellent game, however, and 25,000 people were present, including Sir Gerald Strickland. This was ttie first occasion of Vice-Regal patronage at a League game. For New Zealand Rethe replaced Duvall at fullback, tho latter replacing Probestel as three-quarter. For New South Wales McCue replaced Cummin** in tho forwards. Tho game was notable for tho improvement of the Now South Wales team's play compared with that of Saturday. Now Zealand's defeat is due to this rather than to deterioration ill their own play. New South Wales also hooked the ball from tho scrum oftener thau on Saturday, which enabled the backs to become more dangerous. f Tho New South Wales attack was altogether too- strong, while their defence- was also extremely solid. The- backs handled the ball very cleverly, and showed great pace, considering tho condition of tho ground. The" forwards were very evenly .matched. Messenger's goal-kicking proved an immense help to New South-,Wales. New Zealand's score- in tho first spell com-prised-a penalty goal and a try, both by Ifwerson. For New South Wales Messenger kicked three penalties, and converted a try scored-by Cann. At half time New South Wales was 11 and New Zealand 5. New Zealand's only score in. the second spell was a try by Kelly which ■ Bradley converted. New South-Waiesi playing with much dasli, scored .five;'tries notched by Frawloy, Cann, Define; .Broomham and Courtney, whereof Messenger converted three and kicked a penalty goal. Tho final score was: New South Wales- 35; New Zealand 10. .
