MURDER OF A POLICE OFFICER.
SERGEANT HICKBY'S DEATH
TRIAL OF BROWN/
Sydney, Juno 20.
At the trial of Brown for the mur-
der of Sergeant Hickoy, the arresting constables gave evidence that after his surrender Brown admitted shooting Hickey, saying that he had to do it in self-defence.
Brown, in the course of a statement, declared that in a struggle Hickey grabbed his (Brown's) revolver, and fired, but missed. Later, trying to prevent Hickey from, again shooting, the revolver went off, and Hickey was shot.
On April 30th Sergeant Edwin Hickey and Constable Barclay went to St Ives to servo two commitment warrants upon Thomas Edwin Brown, an orebardist. They found Brown at the footr of his orchard, and when he learned their business he invited the officers to come to the house, where Constable Barclay told Brown to consider himself under arrest. The members of the family then entered the room, and Barclay attempted to seize Brown. Sergeant Hickey jumped towards Brown, and was almost touching him when three shots rang out in quick succession, followed by a fourth a little later. Sergeant Hickey collapsed immediately, with three bullets in hisj stomach. A fourth struck Brown's son on the wrist. Sergeant Hickey died on the way to the hospital. After the tragedy Brown bolted, and Constable Barclay followed and covered him with-a revolver. Brown in the meantime dispossessed himself of the revolver, and surrendered quietly. j Brown has attracted considerable public attention in late years, owing to his persistent appearance in the Sup-i reme and other Courts as a litigant, j He has filed affidavits on various occasions alleging corruption among tho judiciary, tho law officers, and a number of liigh officials.
