Christchurch, Juno 20. The Hon. R. Hcaton Rhodes, Postmaster General, speaking to a ■reporter to-day held out no hop© of the abandoned proposal to establish a wireless station at New Brighton, or elsewhere- m tho vicinity of Christchurch, being w»Tonsidered" by- the ■Government, /lo obviate the complete isolation of tho South. Island during a. largo part of every night, as was shown to exist bytho recent failure of tho Niwaru to.get. into touch with Ohristchureh or Lyttelton at night, it is proposed to utilise tho telephone wire between Ciinstrdrurch and Wellington for .the purpose of sending a eigtial.when. it is desired to open communication from tiro JNorm 'Inland: On such a signal being received at the Christchureh telephone office, a telegraph operator will bo sent for, and tho message will bo rccomxl- m tho' ordinary way. . As to the reported closing down ol tho Auckland'wirelo&s station for flopo i-cn&kioKible part of each night, which was referred to in this morning's paper, Mr. Rhodes is having inquiries made.
