THE SAMFORD TRAGEDY.
CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE
AGAINST AUSTIN

A man named Austin was remanded on a charge of murdering the girl Ivy Mitchell at Samford. He accounted- for the presence of blood on his clothes by a cut finger, and having killed some calves. His former employer testified that accused left his employ three days before the murder was committed, and had not killed any calves.
On the 9th inst. the body,of a girl named Ivy Mitchell was found hidden in scrub at Samford. Her throat was cut from ear to ear. The girl, who was cloven years of age, was visiting friends two miles distant, and started for home early in tho afternoon. When she had hot returned by dark her father and brother searched for her, and discovered tho body in" thick scrub. Edward Austin, i\ farm labourer, was arrested on suspicion of having murdered the girl.
