THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.
AGITATION FOR RENEWAL,
AUSTRALIA OUTDONE BY NEW
ZEALAND,
(Received June 19, 10.15 p.m.)
Sydney, June 19
The Chambers of Commerce Congress adopted a resolution asking tho Federal Government to take- immediate steps to re-establish the direct steamship .service between Vancouver and Australia.
The mover urged the need of the service in order to secure tho growing trade with Canada. It was a business proposition which would soon repay itself.
Mr J. Paxton said that after spending money up to the paying point for the service, Australia quietly sat down and allowed Now Zealand to develop the trade and get the benefit. of Australia's expenditure. It was a grave (reflection upon the Commonwealth Administration that such a thing was allowed. New Zealand had gone in for a contract for a limited term, bnt the Government was behind it, and when the time came it was well known that the contract would be renewed.
