MAITAI BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

A, Deo) occupied i the chair. , The fiiiiiuai- report, road by the socretary, sir. 3. F. bhcrwood, was as follows: —In submitting tho eleventh annuai report your committee have again the pleasure of congratulating the members on a most successful season's operations. The general comrnitiee have met monthly during the season, and the attendances have been good. The season opened on Saturday, September 28, 1912, and closed on May 4th, 1913. The club competitions closed with largo entries, and, the various events wore, as usual, keenly contested. The entries and results were as follows:—Senior championship, 33 entries, played in 4 sections: "Winner, G. F. Dodds* (president's trophy) ; runnerup, W. Dee (club trophy). Junior championship, 17 entries, played in 2 .sections: Winner W. Laird (vice-pre-sident's trophy); runner-up, H. 11. Rud'man (club . trophy). President's pairs, 9 pairs, 1 section: Winners, G. C. Glover and J. W. Richards. Harford feathers, .8 rinks (club trophies): Winners, G. Glover, J. K. Johnston, W. Frost, J. W. Richards. Korr buckles, 5 rinks (club trophies): Winners, M. Levenston, W. Wilkons, A. Kiu-ston, \V. Thorn. Simpson pairs, for trophies presented by Mr. G. R. Simpson, 21 pairs, 2 sections: Winners, A. Richards and W. Frost. Wright bowls (singles), 43 entries: Winner, W. Doe (pair of bowls presented by Dr. H. Wright). Holiday tournament© were arranged, and resulted as follows:— Labour Day pairs, 13 pairs (Mr Dodds and club' trophy): Winners, G. C. Glover and W. Hockey. Boxing Day rinks, 7 rinks: Winners, W. J. Smith, J McEachen, S. M. Galbraith, and J. M. Cakler (club trophies). _ Anniversary day pairs, 14 pairs: Winners, J. B Collier and G. Dee (medals presented by Mr G. H. Johnson) ; runner s-up, F. Pitt and W. Frost (club trophies). The prizes won during the season will bo presented at a social and progressive ouchro tournament to be held in the Haeremai rooms. Pennant matches:— Six matches have been played vith the Nelson Club, five of which wore won by our own club, and one by the Nelson Club. The aggregate points for the season were Maitai 739 Nelson 682. In the Leaper shield matches, instituted by the presentation by Messrs. Leaper Bros, of a shield for players not picked in pennant matches, six games have been played, of which the Nelson Club won 4, and the Maitai Club 2. Having a majority of wins, the Nelson Club (under the rules govorning the competition) have • the honour of having their clubs name inscribed upon it, and hold it till next! season The aggregate scoros in these ] matches were Nelson 486, Maitai 4.43. The club has won the Saundere Cup seven times, having sustained defeat only on one occasion, and hold the cup! till'next season. Tho Wakefield feathers, presented by the Wakefield Club for one rink inter-club play, were captured by the Nelson Club early in tho season, and they ; are still the holders of the same. "Three attempts have been made by this club to wi,n them, but each time have been unsuccessful. On the last attempt the game ended 14 all. The Easter tournament was held as usual, and although the number of visiting rinks wei*o smaller than in former years, a very successful gathering took place. At the N.B.A tournament tho club was represented by one rink at Auckland, comprised of ■A. Dee, S.M. Galbraith, J, E. Allen, and W. Doe, who, although not successful in winning the banner, put up some .very keen fights in their section. The amalgamation of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Northern Bowling Association, and the. Auckland Provincial Bowling Association is now an accomplished fact, and the full control » ■ , .■■■.■',

of all bowliiiT rraii«»'s in tho Dominion is now in the hands of the Dominion of Now Zealand Bowling Association. The Dominion is being divided into centres,'. who will have local control, subject to tj'ie rules of'the association, and it is expected that the Nelson centre ■ will..soon be in operation. Correspondence* on. this subject will be laid bofore you. The committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the timo and care bestowed on the green by their valued caretaker. Air. W. Tomblin, whose efforts in this direction have no doubt largely contributed to.the improvement in play^of members., 'The green has been well cleared vi weeds, and sown si,nce the close of tho season, and' bids fair next season to be in every respect a much better green than even the one we had in the past season. The committee desire to thank tho donors of trophies, the ladies aad friends who contributed a,nd dispensed afternoon tea during the season, as well us the Preys for liberal reports during the season. A special meed of praise is due and is tendered fco Messrs. ivarston and Levenston for the eiicellex.L manner in which they have catered for the afternoon teas, outside of those friends mentioned above, which lias relieved the committeo of a groot deal of worry and anxiety. The honorary treasurer (Mr. J. E. Milner) presented the balance sheet, which shovvvd that the receipts for the year had amounted to £174 V2s Bd, and tho expenditure to £213 18ft lid. Tho president said that "fiio club was £18 18s better off than it was last .year. On the motion of Mr. A. Richards, seconded by Mr. A. Karsten, the report and balance ehoet were adopted. Gorrespondonee was road from the secretary of tho New Zealand Bowling Association in reference to tho formation of a Nelson centre. It was stated that a conference had been held with the No!son Club, and it had been decided to form a centre. On the motion of Mr. G. M. Simpson, seconded by Mr. G. Glover v the action of the committee was approved. Messrs. W. T. Brundell, E. K. Madigan and H. J. Walters were elected members. The electi;*,. of officers resulted a& follows: President, Mr. J. E. Allen ; vice-president, Mr. G. F. Dodds; treasurer, Mr. J. E. Milner (re-elected) ; secretary, Mt. S. F. Sherwood (reelected), auditor, Mr. J. E. Allen (reelected) ; match recorder, Mr. C. M. Whelan (r<i-electod) ; touring manager, Mr. J. E. Allen (re-olected) ; management committee (after a ballot), Messrs. L. Pegier, A. Karsten. "W. Hockey, G. M. Simpson, J. M. Oalder, A. Richardß, E. Richards. On vacating the chair, the retiring president expressed the hope that members would give the nowly-olecfccd president the same support as they had given him, and said that Mr. Ailen would not find the office difficult to fill. His term of oiilce had been a. very pleasant one. Mr. Dee said the club had now a splendid green and in Mr. Tomblin a caretaker second to none in tho Dominion. Mr. Dee took the opportunity of thanking Messrs. Karsten and Levenston for the services they had rendered in providing afternoon tea. The new president, who was accorded three hearty cheers on taking tJio chair, thanked tiio members for the honour they had done in electing him to the position. He expressed tho opinion that tho formation of a centre would do much to advance, the game of bowk. A vote of thanks was accorded the donors of trophies. The president referred to tht> innoYn,tions that had been introduced by the match committee last season in_ changing the positions of players in rink matches in club competitions, and hoped that they had mot with the approval of members. He referred to'the enorts made, by . Mr. C. M. Whelan to place the club in a better financial position, and moved that he be accorded a hearty vote of thanks for what he ! had done. Mr. Milnor, in seconding tho motion, said that as a result of Mr. Whelan's efforts £25 had been given in donations. • Several other members having spoken in eulogistic terms of Mr. Whelan's services, tho motion was put, and carried amidst enthusiasm. Votes--of thanks wore j also accorded Messrs. Karsten and Levenston for tho manner in which they had managed the afternopn tea; tho retiring officers and committee. The meeting then chsod.
