ANNUAL MEETING.
(From "The Colonist," June 2.) Th© annual meeting of the Nelson College Old Boys' Association was held in tho Nelson Institute building on Saturday evening. Dr. S. A. Gibbs (president) was in the chair. The annual report read by the secretary, Mr. H. P. Kidson, was'pa follows:— ,"Fivos Courts: In pursuance of tlio authorisation given at the last annual general nvaeting, the committee eont out over a thousand circulars to a.l old boys resident in New Zealand, and to a few in Australia, appealing for funds for presenting a lives court to the school A& a result the sum of £53 Gs was received. It was decided to supplement tho net receipts out of the funds of the association, and to hand over £75 to the Board of Governors, who will proceed with tho construction of the courts aY soon as possible. "Grounds: Thanks to tho horse mower and roller presented by tho Old Boys' Association, tho College ground, which, was leveled by subscription amongst old hoys, has steadily improved, and is now in first class condition. "Enrolment: A final effort has been made by soliciting the aid of old boys resident in other districts to enrol all old Nelsonians. As a result 141 new members have been obtained. Of these twelve are life members. This brings tho total membership up to 619. "Old Boys' Register: A supplementary list has been published of names of boys who have left, and who have entored since fche last edition of the register was published. This lias increased the demand for tho copies of tho register that remain. A canvass, particularly amongst boys at College, has resulted in 30 copies being sold. This lessons very considerably the dobt on the register. There are eighty copies still left, and about thirty of thaso originally ordered are still unpaid for. Tho compiling of the supplementary list will bo a most useful work. "Finances: In spite of a generous donation from the association's funds to the fives courts fund, finances are in a very satisfactory state. There is a credit balance or £.32 2s 10(1. Of this £14 9s 2d is stiil advanced to the rogistor fund, leaving an actual cash balance of £37 13s Sd. hi every way the year has been a successful one. "Recommendations: The committee suggest that tho question as to whether the association should adopt a bla»er and a mota.l badge should be discussed at this genera] meeting. They also would recommend to the meeting that tho annual report and balance sheet be published ? and sent to all members of tho association, and to such otlior old boys a« it may be deemed advisable, and that if the cost is not prohibitive, a list of inomk'rii ix~ attacht-d thereto." The report and balauco eheet were adopted. The president said tho committee was of opinion that the affairs of the association were in & vory satisfactory condition. A matter for consideration was the proposed printing of the report, and circulating it amongst ail old boye. Practically the only time some old boys wore brought into touch with the association was when requests wero being sont round for subscriptions, and the committee i'elt it would be woll to have gomo communication with old boys that was not soliciting for money. Tho suggestion regarding the printing of the report, etc., was moved as a motion, and carried unanimously. _At this stage of tho proceedings Dr. Gibbs received an urgent call, and on leaving the room ho stated that it was his intention not to accept office as president thiß yoar. Those aSßOciated with him had done their best for the association, and had made his work light and pleasant. He did not think it was right.for one man to hold. oliio& too long, and, besides, others should have tho. highest honcoir old boys could confer on one oi their number. On leaving the room Dr. Gibbs was given threo hearty cheers. Mr. W. flout, i«s senior vice-presi-dent, was then voted to tho chair. After general diacuasion, it was resolved that the association approve the adoption of a blazer, the design to bo loft with the committee. It was aiso decided that tho question of a metal badge for old boys be left to the incoming committee to deal with. : The chairman said all would regret that Dr. Gibbs could not see his way to continue to fill tho office of president. He had given whole-hearted attention to the work, and had done much to advance the interests of the association. The chairman, in proposing that Mr. W. Do/cnish bo elected president, referred to the great interes* io _*°ok *« all matters connected with Nelson Col.'cge. Ho had worked heart and soul for the association and tho speaker prophesied a prosperous year undor hie direction. The motion ' was seconded, and carried with much 'enthusiasm.
