RETIREMENT FROM THE POLICE

REFERENCE AT LICENSING
COMMITTEE

At tho conclusion of tho annual mooting of the Nelson Licensing -Committee yesterday, referring to the approaching retirement of bemor-ber-geant Darby from tho police force, tho chairman (Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M.) said it was very satisfactory that there were no real complaints—except the one that had been dealt with—as to the conduct of the hotels, which was probably due to the excellent supervision maintained by S^nior-Se-rgcant Darby whilo he had been in Nelson. Sergeant Darby, lie said, had tire confidence^ not only of the Licensing Bench, but those ■enpurred in the trade, as well -as the public. Mr. E.-B. Moore, on behalf or the bar. confirmed the remarks of the chairman. , Senior-Sergeant Darby, in replying, said he felt very grateful indeed for the remarks that had been mado. He said he camo to Nelson a stranger a fowmonths ago. .and had got on we"] with everyone. He had visited the hotels frequently, en Sundays, after hours-, in. fact at all times, and had never •found -hotels better conducted' anywhere than in Nelson, and he had been in the-""Service 37 years. Sergeant Darby finid that in six months there had only been 24 arrests for drunkenness, and .the majority of the offenders werestranger^ tt> Nelson. ;. H> concluded by expressing his thanks again for the kind remarks that had been made.
