EMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA.

EXPLANATION OF THE DECREASE

PROSPECTS LESS ATTRACTIVE,

London, June 16

"The Times" 'mentions among the causes of the decrease in British emigration to Australia, Canada's keener competition after Australia's boom of 1911-12; fewer building operations in Melbourne and Sydney, as a result of financial stringency arising from the Balkan. situation ; and also the action of certain States in temporarily reducing the facilities for assisted passages.

A branch of the Commonwealth Savings Bank has been inaugurated here. Sir George Reid explained its advantages to emigrants, who, he said,.would be enabled to deposit money which would earn 3 per cent while they were, at sea, and then have it transmitted to Australia free of charge.
