THE JUDGE'S DIRECTION

New York, June 1

The Judge in the libol action at Marquette, Micliigan, directed the jury to return a verdict for nominal, damages because, although Mr Roosevelt was fully entitled to exemplary carnages, he had pleaded in defendant's favour that ho was willing to forego damages if his character was vindicated. The Judge held that Newett. thought ho was doing a public: service by calling attention to a supposed failing of a public man.
