SENIOR-SERGEANT DARBY.
RETIREMENT FROM THE POLICE); FORCE.
DEFERENCE AT LICENSING CQMMITTEE.
At the conclusion of the annual meeting of the Nelson Licensing Committee, yesterday, referring to . the approaching retirement of Senior-Ser-geant Darby from the police force, the chairman (Mr. J. S. Erans, S.M.) said it was very 'Satisfactory that there wore no real complaints—except the one thai had been dealt with—as to the conduct of the hotels, which was probably due to the excellent supervision, maintained ; by Senior-Sergeant Darby wliile ho had been in Nelson. Sergeant Darby, ho said, had the confidence not only of the Licensing Bench, but thosoengaged in the trade, as well as the public. Mr. E. B. Moore, on behalf of the. bar, confirmed the remarks of thechairman.
Senior-Sergeant Darby, in replying, said ho felt very grateful indeed for theremarks that had been made. He said ho came to Nelson a stranger a few months ago, and had got on well with everyone. He had visited the hotels frequently, on Sundays, after hours, in fact at -all times, and had never found hotels better conducted anywhere than in Nelson, and lie had been in the service 37 yearn. Sergeant Darby said that in six months there had only been 24 .arrests for drunkenness, andr the majority of the offenders wem •strangers to Nelson. He concluded by expressiMg his thanks again for tin? kind remarks that had been made.
