FOOTBALL.
SATURDAY'S MATCHES
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.
WAIMEA (25) V. RIVAL (0)
Ideal football weather prevailed on Saturday, and a fair number of spectators witnessed the senior match at the Park. Waimea were too strong for their opponents, but the score, 25 —0, is no criterion of tho difference in the sides on the day's play. The game throughout was fast and interesting, and especially in the second spell a merry pace was set by both sides. The Rival forwards were weaker in scrum work than their opponents, but their play in the open was considerably better. Tho Waimea back division was stronger than it has 'been for several seasons, and their excellent combination was responsible for their victory. Individually tho blute and black rearguard played well, but through failing to act in unison, many opportunities were lost.
Waimea won the toss, and Rough kicked off for Rivals, who immediately attacked strongly. Bcitt relieved the pressure by a strong kick^ and his side gradually worked to their opponents1Tine. Challies sent the ball out to his backs, and a pretty passing bout ended in Batt touching down. Atchison missed on easy kick. Waimea 3, Rival 0. From the kick-out Watson, who played a great game throughout, led a Rival rush to the red arid white twenty-five, and a strenuous attack was maintained until a hard Jack gave a chanco to force. A Waiinop forward rush was well stopped,''and Watson was again instrumental in giving his side the advantage. From a mark Grigg made an excellent effort to convort, the ball falling a few inches short, and Waimea forced. Prom the kick o\it their forwards attacked, but J. Nisbett obtained, and made a/good run. Atchison initiated a rush by the Waimea backs, but MeEvoy spoilt it. Play remained at half way for some minutes, \intil Challies put the ball out near the corner with a well judged kick. Then Ford secured, but lost the ball on the line, and Rival forced. .Waimoa continued to attack strongly, ■hut Watson effected a splendid save. Again Waimea came at their opponents, and Atchison marked near the posts. The same player kicked a goal. Waimca G; Rival 0. Half time then sounded.
In the second half play was very fast, each side converting defence into attack in a twinkling. Rivals had many opportunities to score, but were unable to do so. The Waimea backs, on the other hand, upon several occasions consummated their passing rushes by crossing their opponents' lino, and'succeeded in increasing their lead, to 25 points. Scores were obtained by "Willces (2), MeEvoy, and Challies, ' Ford converting two. Atchison also kicked a penalty goal. For •Waimea Atchison, *M«Evoy, and Challies in the backs, and Stewart, Wilkes, and Challies in the forwards showed up most. For Rival, Watson was a tower.of strength, and easily the best forward on the ground, but tho remainder all played well. In the backs, Grigg. King, and Couzens were the best.y Mr. Cannington was the re■feree. JUNIOR. After a very even game the Hope Pirates defeated College by 9 points (o goal and a potted uoal) to 3 (a try). Mr. Johnston controlled the game. THIRD CLASS. College B succumbed to Waimoa by 38 points to 0. The match was played on the College ground. Mr. Beech was referee.
