TO-DAY'S FIXTURES

Men's setiior— Nelson y. Stoke, Nelson. Ladies' senior— Wakatu- v. Kia Ora, Nelson

(NOTES BY "STYX.")

As anticipated in my last week's notes tho Nelson v. YVai-Mai luatch provided tho spectators with "'good hockey, ixight rroin start to finish thoro was not a dull minute. On the day's play tho better team won. Nelson played a good ali round game. With Clark and iioyes heading the forwards, and both wings playing well, they gave tho Wai-Mai backs a hot time", and their half line effectively settled Stvatton and Bradshaw. Boyes, who was showing up well, had t-o go off at hall time owing to an injury, CJark y. nieo bacimaudoa goal. I'ayJur worked like a Trojan in tho half lino. Wells, left wing, was continually intercepting passes to tho Wai-Mai right wing, and generally played a good game, ivingsland is a grafter. i!e showed up well in the second spell, and with a game or two should be much better. He obsfcructfi too much, however. The fullback© were very safe, especially. Bradloy, who showed his best form. Tho luck was certainly against ' Wai-Mai, two shots by Stratton were put over the top of tho net, and it was unfortunate that Cunningham collided with Hockey, tho, result of which gave Nelson an easy charfce, and was accepted. Trott wa« again disappointing. Stratton and Bradshaw tried hard to got through several times, but were too well marked. Instead of keeping the ball close thoy should have put it out to the wings, and drawn the defence. Switzer got a nio© goal through following up in, and showed much improved form. More chances should have been given him as ho, was practically unmarked; Neil should have dropped to Wells' game, and cut in on him, instead of waiting. Chapman was easily the pick of the half line, and this year is playing a fine game. Kilgour and Cv minings worked hard, but both seem to.be playing out of their positions. The fullbacks were both safe, and had plenty to do. Cunningham, in goal, was not as safe a« usual. He should remember that a ball with a hot pack of forwards oh its trail is better let alone when going out of play. Two of his .saves were full of merit.

To put it in plain words, Stoke "got all over" Federal. With H. Everett in the ha'.f line, and other alterations to the tcanij they played a really fine game. Giblin was brilliant, and Kenning -was very safe, taking no chances. In the half line H. Everett wag a nasty thorn for Federal forwards to run up against, and was ably backed up by Holtham and Deo. The forwards passed the ball about in good.style, ami played well. The Federal backs had a particularly warm time of it. Neale, and Gallon at full-back put in a lot of solid work, and the half line were never given a breather. Web ley has not struck his best form yet. The forwards played with plenty of dash, but they failed badly at circle play. A promotion of some of the junior forwards would make an improvement. Tho junior match between Nelson and Federal was worth wntolling, and both I sides played good hockey. To-day the nrst or tiie ladies' senior matches will bo played between Wakatu and Kia Ora. The Stoke v. Nelson match is being eagerly looked forward to. and if both teams- show last Saturday s form, then the spectators may look forward to a rattling good game. Most likely Nelson will play a Norden Cup match in. July, but no d;vt<?. bns boon definitely fixoU ns ye^. .Next week I will devote some r;paee to-obstruction and other bad faults. . The combined tournament to "be held on Juno 3rd promises to be a huge success, and a record crowd is expected at the Reserve. The Stoke Orphr.ncgo band will play sobctions during the day. TEAMS. The following will represent the- Wakatu this afternoon: Missies L. Gill, L. Reeves, L. Wa'.kor. 11. Saunders, J. Barker, R. Israel. J. Jack, D. and N. Boyce, W. Banvott, and M. Oldercbaw ; emergency, Miss Robinson. The following will represent the Federals, in tho six-a-sid« tournament on June 3rd:—A team : Hockey, Neale, Webley, Dee, Louisson, Fittall. B. team: Gallon, Hollyman, . Burns, Parker, Johanson, Frankish.
