THE CONVEYANCE OF CHILDREN.

EDUCATION BOARD UNABLE-TO ASSIST.

Numerous applications have been received by the Education Board from School Committees for grants for the conveyance of school children to Nejson on the occasion of the visit of the battleship New Zealand^* It was stated that the Board could not legally vote money for this purpose, and the chairman stated that th© Board must, with very great regret, give up the idea of contributing towards the cost of the conveyance of children from outside districts. It was intimated that free railway passes would be issued to children living in the vicinity of the railway lino. In view of Captain Halsey's request that small children should not be taken on board tho warship, it was decided to limit tho ages of country children to those of 8 years, and over, and town children of 7 years and over.! Even if grants could be made legally for the purpose of conveying the chLdren, it was pointed out that tho amount that would be involved would run into hundreds of pounds.
