MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Motueka Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening last, there being present the Mayor (Mr M. Simpson), and Cra Moffatt, Ilumbold, Fry, Grooby, and Brougham. The special business for consideration was the revision and consolidation of the by-laws. Several alterations were made in the way of excisions and additions. No resident will be allowed to keep swine within one hundred feet of any street. No motor vehicle will be allowed to go at a faster pace than ten miles an hour through the principal stroets, and at all street intersections the pace must be reduced to four miles an hour. A long discussion took place on the question of the streets, in which it was necessary to fix a building line. The recent question of Pah street was again gone into, the Mayor pointing out that Pah street should remain as it is, in order to make the recent action of the Council consistent. The Town Clerk stated that the Council's solicitor had advised him that the recent action of the Council in rescinding the Pah street by-law without notice was illegal, but as all the by-laws woro not in order the position was that Pah street was only a fifty link street, and there was_ therefore no building line in connection with it. Cr Moffatt moved that a building line of 33 feet from the street centre be struck in the following streets, via.. Pah street. Greenwood street, Poole street, Atkins street, Parker street, King Edward street, "Wildman street. Victoria street, and Whawarowa street. The speaker spoko strongly on

th<a-question of pippding wide streets for the future generation. Or Grooby seconded the resolution, and Cr Fry spoke iitrongiy in support of it. The .Mayor moved as an amendment that the building huo be struck only in Poole stroot, Greenwood street, Atkins stroet, and Parker street. All the other streets wore, in his opinion, quite wide enough. Cr Brougham seconded and supported the amendment. The amendment was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. Crs Brougham, ltumbold and the Mayor voted for the amondment, and Crs luoiiatt, Fry, and Grooby against it. Ail persons aosirous of constructing any building in Higii street will in the future have to submit plans to the Council for approval. All the remaining by-laws wore read and passed, and a resolution was carried repealing all previous by-laws of the Council on the present by-laws coming into operation. Tenders were authorised to be callod for widening a portion of Greenwood stroet. The Mayor reported that with Cr Brougham ho hud inspected Foaron's Bush, and he recommended that the Council purchase as much as the funds from the sale of the rccroation ground would allow. Cr Fry reported that ho had interviewed Mr Fell on the matter, and that gentleman had informed him that if a certain area was required it would be necessary for hir:i to writo for authority to divide the property; .neither hud'he any authority to low\r the pi-1. '■• already quoted. The matter was loft in aV-yanco until next meeting.
