In r,he House of Commons, Mr. Herbert Samuel gave notice of the introduction of a Bill to carry out the post office tube railway outlined in May last.
In introducing the Past Offieo Estimates in.May last, Mr. Samuel, after calling attention to the continuous "growth of the work of tho Department, informed the Committee that in London the development was so great that the Government contemplated1 the construction of a tube railway running eas,t and west to carry mails "end parcels. \They considered that: this would be a remunerative investment.
The Postmaeter-GoneraPs announcement recalled'the fact th^t an experiment on somewhat similar lines was made* by-the Department many' "years ago. A pneumatia».toi>&«wa« then conl sti"uobecl ■ between the General Post , Office »ni Eiijstan. Station; but. it prowed a failure. Tfte echeme.contemplates the formation: of tufted .[<&'. 'enffic, isnt &iz& to- convey parcels; by means of electricallyKlriven motors ~. At the outset the tube will in all probability oxtend from, the headquarters in Newgate street to the Parcel Post Office and General Sorting Office at Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell. If the experiment proves successful an extension of the service may bo made, first to the Eastern District Poet Office, and afterwards to other district offices and railway \ termini. - I
