GOVERNMENT STATEMENT

URGED

THE EXPEDITION'S LIABILITIES

(Received Feb. 19, 11.5 p.m.) London, Feb. 19,

Tlie newspapers' funds amount to £8000. Mr. .1. M. Barrie, the novelist,

who is godfather to Mr. Peter Scott, in a letter to the * newspapers asks the Government for a definite statement regarding the funds. He says the confusion in the public mind is prevent-, ing free subscription.

Mr. Barrie believes Lord Curzon is in error regarding the liabilities of the expedition, which amount to £12,000, not £30,000.

The "Daily Telegraph" says Captain Scott sank £30,000 of his private fortune, in. fitting out the expedition.

Mr. Austen Chamberlain suggests that a monument of Captain Scott and his comrades bo placed in St. Paul's.

Lady Ellison Macartnej7, Captain. Scott's sister, writes to Mrs. Evans expressing her brother's great admiration for Seaman Evans.

Lord Charles Beresford has sent her a similar letter expressing his respect and admiration.
