CANDIDATES FOR HOLY ORDERS*
SELECT COMMITTEE'S REPOiT,
Tli© Bishop of Auckland brought up and read fhe following report of tho select committee appointed to consider the question of candidates for Holy Order. Th© report stated:—"Your Committee have considered the question submitted to them, and make the following recommendations: — "(1) That while there is no real scarcity of aspirants to Holy Orders, there is need of greater effort on the part of. .the Church to discover, encourage, and cssist them. It is strongly rccommend,ed that the heads of secondary schools, as well as the local clergy, should bo called upon to make known among tho young men under their influence, both, the need of them for the ministry and; the opportunities of service. (2) Asparents are seldom both willing and ableto provide the expense of training' their sous foi the ministry, it is urgently recommended that in every diocese a fund should.be established under the control: of the Standing Committee- f"r the assistance of .aspirants to tho ministry.. (3) 'While- existing hostels, where theological students are at present received, should be maintained and developed foiv the purpose of graduation, and for passing tho earlier examinations of theBoard of Theological Studios, it is dtesirabk that students should pass through/- -- further period of study, and devotion under careful a.ud experienced guidance, This'would involve residence at a provincial college organised for tho purpose, at which candidates could spend at least a year before receiving deacon's orders. It-is to be noted that this was the main idealof Bishop Sshvyn in founding St., John's.College, .Auckland. (4) It is an essential part of tbjo training of the junior clergy that they should be ordained to parishes or parochial districts in ■which they may. bo. placed under th* c?.re of an oxi>er.ionced parish priest, before having independent responsibilities laid upon thorn, and that the power of so selecting a parish for an ordained: deacon shou'd be- in the hands of tli© bishop. Your committee welcome the suggestion that men who have obtained a university dogbee and gained tho nec"ossary theological qualification might be made deacons at the age of 21, by faculty from the Primate; on the representation of- the.bishop of the diocese. (SVYour committee further ■submit tho following resolution : "That tlio member ti oi' tlio committee.- together with the hoadis of theological colleges., be appointed a commission to further thiG above recommendations in so far as they can be practically carried out, and to report further to the next General Synod. s'. ■■-..■..
