NELSON RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL COMPETITION

(From.,'' The Colonist;" Feb. 4.)

The sixteenth annual shoot of the above association was held on the Toi Toi Valley range yesterday iii splendid weather, except for a choppy wind; a* the 600 yards range. There was a good attendance of riflemen and some good scores were put up. Three. ex-New Zealand champions were among the competitors, viz.. Captain R. M. Irvine, Messrs. J. \V. Milroy and J. W. Ching. Captain G..H. Hammond, chief executive officer was in charge of the meeting, and carried out hie duties admirably. An extra target was erected by a working bee of the executive council, to whom the thanks of the association are due. Rifleman J. Anstice, of the Nelson Defence Rifle Club, proved himself the district champion by winning tho belt from Rifleman J. W. Milroy, the holder,'by a margin of 4 points. His win was popular, especially as he is quite young as a rifle shot, this being his third championship meeting, and to wrest the belt from such a strong opponent as Rifleman Milroy is no mean achi&vement. MKroy . finished at 800" yards with 49. and Anstice knew he had to make 46 to win, which shows he has the nerve to make a good finisher, for he opened with a 3 for lib sighter, and a 3 for his first, counter, but be -'made rib'"1 mistake with' the remaining' 8 shots.

- Rifleman McGuire, also made a g<v><? score at 800 yards, dropping one point on his last shot. A word of praise is due- to the'markers, as. there' were only 5 shots cliallenged out of 1500 shots fired, this being a record for the Nelson Association.
