NEWS OF THE DAY.

The hardest frost of the .season in Napier was experienced on Sunday night. There was a heavy fall of snow in the back country.

At Woodville yesterday a man named Richard Stevens was fined 40e- and costs for driving over a child and not stopping to see whether it was hurt.

A 70-foot whale was stranded on Sunday live miles north of Uarrytown (Greymouth). This is being brought about mainly owing to the unwieicliness of toe parish.

Mr Hudson Maxim, the well-known i inventor, has designed a warship in | which some remarkable features aro ' embodied. Mr Maxim has just psikiiitod^ a i design for a new torpedo boat, which is callable of being submerged, and of taking, on water, a momentum like that ' of a locomotive on land. He has also ; discovered a new method 01 discharg- ' ing' torpedoes, which aro semi-propeii- ; ed, and which have a much greater i speed and range than those at present ' in use. j
