LAND REFORM.
GOVERNMENT AND THE SINGLE
TAX
STATEMENT BY MR ASQUITH
(Received July 9, 9.25 p.m.)
London, July 9.
Speaking in tho House of Commons, Mr Asquith, in reply to questions, said Mr Lloyd George, with his approval, had formed an unofficial committee to investigate land reform-. The "Government would be responsible for any ultimate proposals. The Government was not pledged to the single tax.
Sir Randolf Baker asked why the bye-elections were being fought on tho single tax unless it was tho Government's policy?
Mr Asquith replied, "That does not rest with me."
Mr Lloyd George, in his speech at Wooelford, said his views on the land question were shared by his colleagues. It was perhaps picturesque to say that the land was shackled by tho chains of feudalism, biit it was not inaccurate.
