PROCEEDING TOO FAST.

The State Government has cabled to the Agent-General to go slow at present in the matter of immigration.
It is stated that farm hands and artisans are readily placed, but there have been too many unskilled labourers. The drynoss is. affecting the demand in the country, and incidentally the shippers desire to raise the assisted fares from £12 to £14.

The Labour Congress, by 20 vote's to 13, -carried a resolution requesting the Governr»r>.;U; to discontinue the immigra-
tion policy
It rejected an amendment asking for a limitation of immigration to competent persons for whom legitimate employment was available without displacing local 'workers.
