NOTES BY "STYX."
This afternoon the Federal —Wai-Mai match should be an interesting game. Whiio Nolson should leave tiie iield with a win against "Wai-Mai Ji. The junior match between Nelson and WaiMai should bo an even game; and tho first game in the ladies' junior competition will be played between Hope and Wakatu.
No matches were played last Saturday owing to the weather. When matches are put off owing to wet weather it is not a. fair thing that players should go over mid practise on the grounds. The fact that matches are put off on account of the weather should bo sufficient for players to knowthat the grounds are not playable. The Wellington representative touring team lost its matches against Hawko's Bay and Auckland. Tho latter match was played in rain and on a slushy ground. Tho annual senior men's six-a-sido tournament drew a record attendance and it is pleasing to remark that the hockey shown was v decided improvement as compared with previous _ tournaments. With such a good display of hockey as was shown it should mt be hard to draw a good attendance at- future six-a-sides. •
Nelson B are to be congratulated on winning the tournament. They bad a fair share of luck, but nevertheless they deserved their win.
lieslop, Taylor and Wells were a tower of strength in tho hacks; especially Taylor, who played a fine game. Rout and Hood kept hard at it in every gamo and finally got their ro-w-arc!. Cole, at bully, shone out ruiiRpicuoiisly. I remarked some time. &>JO that Cole would be better suited inside, and this was clearly shown by his play on Monday, as bully. Nelson A, cm paper, looked to l'avo a --rare chance of winning, but they Ikuj
to be content by going under in tho final to their B team. Oldorshaw was the pick of the backs, and Clark, Boyea and Brodie played well in tho forward line. Motueka six played well, but they wore hitting far too hard for a six-a-side, and lost lots of good chances of beating Nelson B, by this fault. Stoke got put out in the semi-finals... The backs and forwards played a good game. Giblin (full-back) undoubtedly played tho best game on the field. Wai-Mai A showed good combination and the nippy passing of the forwards was worth looking at. Switzer was decidedly off, and was erratic in the circle, while in one match Stratton missed one easy chance of scoring. Booth and Hockey shone up in the backs. Federal soon met their Waterloo. Stoke defeated tkem in the first round. Several times they looked like scoring, i but bad circle play spoilt their chances. i Parker played a vigorous .game, but was hanging on to the ball too long. ; Neale (full-back) was not as safe as usual. Webley and Monson both played well. Monson is the making of_ a . fine back player. At present he is in-. » clined to obstruct a lot. Richmond were plainly outclassed, i and Wai-Mai B played only moderately ; well.
