THE NIGHTMARE AND THE BURGLAR.
A Melbourne- correspondent writes : — What with men in white masks and men in black macks, and some with no masks at all, the recent burglary boom has been responsible for -many, strange experiences,. but, perhaps the -strangest «x----'■perience of .all is that ■which is related a.s having fallen to the lot of a young lady living at "Five' Dock. It appears that she is in the habit of having nightmares and at the breakfast table one morning recently she stated that she thought she had heard burglars in the house. Hoi- father laughed at the idea, and said it was- ''another,nightmare.'' At all events, nothing was stolen, and there was no other indication of burglars having visited th? house. The girl, knowing her rnvn weakness for nightmares, laughed, it off with theiest of the family; That very night the girl again r,a,\\ —or thought she saw—burglars. There was a man going through a chest of drawers in her room and collecting jewellery and various knick-knacks of value. She rubbed her eyes and stared' at him. .■Sa.w-him leave the room. She distinctly hoard his footsteps, and at the crtme time she thought she heard other footsteps outside. Presently she got up and lit a candle. She looked under the bod ;"she'Avont out of her room and glanced up and down the hall. But she could see and hear nothing. So she went back to bed, convinced she had had another nightmare. In the morning she said, "Father, were you in my room last night " "No, certainly not,'" he replied. -"Perhaps it Avas Reg. after the chocolates,-'- she said; "I certainly thought I saw a man at my chest of drawers." "It was a nightmare," declared her father." But it was no nightmare this time. Money and jewellery and other articles to the value of about £30 had disappeared from the house.
