"The trial of Wm Ward, who was arrested at Perth, jWcstern Australia, for the murder of Ernest Nixey Smith, dairy manager, at Ohiswick in 1908, has begun.

. "Ward informed a constable on the voyage homo that the deceased tried to arrest him, and- was struck with an umbrella in the struggle. Learning tltat deceased had been stabbed he went to Canada, and 'thence to Australia, where ho hid in the bush. •

Marshall, a tailor, testified that he lieard Ward threaten to gouge Smith's eves out.

Another witness saw Ward follow Smith and strike him with an umbrella. -There was no struggle. Ward was remanded.
