MR MASSEY AND THE CLAN.
PRIME MINISTER'S RETORT,
(Special to "Tha Colonist.")
_. , Wellington, May 9. Ihe exchange of messages between the Prime Minister (the Hon T. Mackenzie) and the Leader of tin* Opposition (Mr Massey) resulting from the latter'« remarks that a Mackenzie could always b© bought, has provoked the upholder of Scottish tradition to send his Irish political opponent the following telegram; "W. F. Massey, Esq., Auckland. Re Mackenzie Clan; your telegram reoeived yesterday while at the back of the Waiau. Ido not gather from it that you deny having made an unjustifiable reflection on the name of an honoured clan, and also on myself personally. The necessarily curtailed report of my remarks contains practically the essence of what I said, hence my/defence, not only of th-e MacJfenzics; but also of all other highland clans, when I declared that althcup-h £30,000 was offered for Prince Charles not one of them would toufch a ponnv of the bribe. If.ydua.ssorttli.at you did not mako-fho ss-rious ro€ectionrs on-the Mackenzies ■■ which I have.. fllitKfod to, I will, ."it otica furnifh you with my sourco of information. Might I point out that you did not show great .-alacrity iv rceponding to the demands Riado in. Parliament on yon for the source of infor r mation of the Gtr.toments that certain members of Parliament fcad oifered money to square another mcin&er' &f Parliament. —T. Mackenzie.*'
