A RUSH FOR THE BOATS

THREE ITALIANS SHOT DEAD

CARPATHIA SAVES 745 SOULS

New York, April 19

The Carpathia arrived at 8.30 in the evening. The interest was intense. Never in its history has the city been so terribly impressed. ■

Notwithstanding rain, enormous crowds awaited the vessel, and 10,000 people gathered at the Battery to watch her pass. An impressive silence prevailed. .

A thousand relatives and friends, many of them weeping, were admitted to the pier. Docking was delayed while thirteen of the- Titanic's life boats were lowered.

The survivors appointed a committee, which issued a statement in order to forestall sensational exaggerations.

The statement says that the- Titanic struck the iceberg at 11.40 on Sunday night. When the look-out - reported the berg there was no time to avoid it.

The night was clear and cold, and starlight. ' The boats were lowered. Thr.ee- Italians were shot dead in a struggle to get to the life boats.

The Carpathia received the call, and reached the .scene at four o'clock in the morning, having everything ready for

rescue work

Tlk> Titanic had 330 first ckss passengers, 320 in tho second class, and 740 in the third class. The officers and crew numbered 940.

The Carpathia rescued 210 first class, 125 second class,, and 200 third class passengers, four officers, 39 seamen, 98 stewards, and 71 firemen.
