EARLIER NELSON
(To the Editor of "The. Colonist.")
Sir, —Clio is notoriously a fickle handmaiden, and in the present instance has not belied her reputation. In an article in your paper under the above heading is the statement that tho "Enterprise" was built by Sylvanus Cotterell: also that my father had a vessel built, which brought a cargo of produce from America to Nelson. From my father's own account, tho "Enterprise,," a schooner of some 75 tons, was built in his yard; also the. "Liberty," a brig of about 250 tons. My father loaded the latter with a .cargo of produce, and sailed in her to San Francisco. On the evening of his arrival in the. Golden Gate the,, crew of the vessel left in the boat and went ofF to Sacramento. The "Liberty" lay and rotted at her moorings, along with many another good vossol. Instead, of my father making a good thing out of this, or any of his vessels, they completely ruined him. I am, etc.
