Despite the committee's evident desire for more peaceful methods, tlso Government has proclaimed martial law in Lisbon, and notified the citizens that they must not' leave their houses after eight o'clock. It ordered the troops to make a clean sweep of the str.-'r-K p.Feet arrests en masse, and send suspects to warships. While- the orders were being carried out several bombs were thrown at the troops, and cavalry charged with drawn swords.
