SCARCITY OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.

[United Feess Association.]

Christchurch, Jan. 17

TJlic shortage of teachers is becoming serious in North Canterbury. In a report presented to-day by tho appointments committee of the Education Board, it was stated that in view of the shortage in tho supply of teachers, evidenced by tho fact that existing vacancies would absorb all students who had left the training college, it had been agreed to agaiirf impress upon the Department the necessity of appointing an additional number of probationers. With regard to tho Department's statement that the difficulty might bo met by falling back upon class B students, who are now practically shut out from training colleges for lack of vacancies, it had been agreed to point out that no applicant under division 6 had been refused admission Jn Christchurch on such grounds. The secretary reported that owing mainly to tho substitution of assistant mistresses in several schools, and to the increase in the attendance, there wero approximately twenty-five vacancies for assistant mistresses to bo advertised. In order to minimise the inconvenience that would be occasioned by advertising for so large a number at a time, it was agreed to call immediate Iv for applications for half the Mml>er. The remaining vacancies will brj advertised later.
