POPULATING AUSTRALIA.
"THE TIMES'" VIEWS
[ Press Association—Copyright. ]
(Received Jan 5, 11.30 p.m.) London, Jan 5. "The Times" states tliat tho Commonwealth defence policy has been removed from the sphere'of partisanship, and immigration should i'c -miilarly treated. The Federal Government is too loisurely, but those clamouring for federal co-oporation are too fastidious about the class'of emigrants and too economical in the advantages they offer. Australia must learn that it doesn't confer a favour upon immigrants by allowing them to enter it. Nowadays empty land is a porpetual temptation to nations whoso territory is inconveniently restricted. Pl.ti Federal Government should provide adequate accommodation by chartering ships or giving companies the roquisite guarantees.
