A toJogram from Wellington states that the number of persons who arrived in Noiv Zealand during last October was 3109, while there wore 2366 departures. The figures for October 1910, nro: Arrivals 3441, departures 2121. The annual gymnastic display and competitions held at the Boys' College took place on Saturday evening in the gymnasium. The scholars from tho Girls' Col.cgc were present and a very fair attendance of parents and friends. Tho display was a very creditable one, and quite up to last year's form The results were as follows : Dumb-bells : Bean, Crisp ii, Macalister, Blair; Clubs, Kay's team; senior cup, Bean (last year's winner), runner up, Hodder; junior championship (a splendid competition): Hudson ii 1, llaino iii '2, N. Richmond 3; under 14; AVardell 1, McGuinness 2. The competitions were followed by pyramids and other gymnastic work. Subsequently the prizes were presented by Miss Lorimor. The North Canterbury Public Schools Amateur .Athletic Association's annual sports eventuated on •'■■'turday and were well attended (says a Chris toll urch telegram). The ■•;u"ious events were well contested pnd got off to time. Several massed displays were held, and were highly successful. ■ A Gore telegram states that a somewhat exciting incident was witnessed in the Gore railway yards on Saturday when a shunting engine was seen racing at tremendous speed to the water tank one of the attached trucks bcinp, on fire. It transpired that the truck contained some cases of petrol, one. of which was evidently leaking, and a spark from the engine set the truck afire. At the .vater tank tho water applied to the truck had the effect only of spreading the ft;rvv which M<re ultimately extingushed by some sl'ovds of gravel and sand. Practically no damage was done, but if the other trucks had caught there would hpve been a strong possibility of a dangerous explosion.
