DRINK AND CRIME AND THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE.
AND THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE.
SEE HOW THEY QUOTE!
AVhy did the extract from the Encyclopedia Britannica, given in the Trade's advertisement of yesterday STOP SHORT
in the very middle of a paragraph ? Why indeed ? Read tho remainder Qf tho paragraph, which is given below, mark particularly the last three sentences, and then jiidgo for yourself. "Some calculations of the proportion of crime associated with drink aavo been made in different countries. In Germany 3G.5 per cent of tho prisoners in one gaol wero found to be drunkards; assaults, 51.3 per cent; resistance to tho police, 70.1 per cent; aflences against morality, 66 per cent (Aschaffenburg). In Italy 50, CO, and 75 per cent of crimes against the person have been attributed to drink, tn Switzerland 40 per cent of male criminals in 1802 were found to have boon under the influence of drink .vhen their offences were committed. In Denmark 43 per cent of tho men convicted, in 1903 were drunkards. These estimates, some of which aro official, suffice to confirm the conneolon botween drink and a great deal of crime, but the basis of investigation s too narrow to permit more than n general conclusion.
"There is, however, one form of crime for which drink is almost wholly responsible, and this furnishes the blackest of all indictments against it. The intensity of suffering and injury inflicted on children by tho atrocious cruelty and neglect of drunken parents cannot be overstated. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children finds that 90 per cent of the cases which come under its notice are duo to drink." MORAL: Take all quotations and statements made by the Trade with a large grain of salt, or rather, don't swallow them at all. On behalf of our wojnen and children STRIKE OUT THE TOP LINE*
