PROTECTIVE TARIFF.
STATEMENT BY SIR JOHN FINDLAY.
[•United Press Association.]
Auckland, Nov. 20. Replying to a deputation of nurserymen asking for tariff protection against imported fruit trees in order to prevent the extinction of the industry in Now Zealand, Sir John Fim.llay expressed the opinion that unbs.the tariff was adjusted to enable tho wages required by law to be paid the whole industrial system of New Zealand must come to the ground. Ho believed that the Dominion industries to-day which were languishing for tho want of proper protection could be fostered to tho benefit of tho whole of the Dominion. H<? advocated asp. remedy copying the machinery which was used with such triumphant success by Germany in tho erection of the most scientific protective tariff of the whole world. A commission would shortly be appointed to inquire into the cost of living and would, ho hoped have its powers widened to collect evidence in such cases as that of the nurserymen.
